Facebook Profile Picture: Size and Crop Guide

Facebook displays your profile picture as a circle too — the safe upload size, and the same margin rule that applies to Instagram.

For a Facebook profile picture, upload a square (1:1) image at least 720×720px (180×180px is the technical minimum, but larger holds up better after compression) — and, like Instagram, Facebook displays it inside a circle, so keep your face centered with margin around it rather than framed edge-to-edge.

The exact numbers

  • Upload size: 720×720px recommended, 180×180px minimum, 2048×2048px maximum
  • Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)
  • Display: shown as a circle on both desktop and mobile — the corners of your square upload are cropped off automatically
  • Display size: shrinks to well under 200px in most placements, smaller still in comments

Getting the crop right

Use a crop tool locked to a square ratio, centering the subject with visible space on every side — the same circular-mask logic that applies to Instagram and LinkedIn applies here too, so a photo cropped tight to the edges loses part of the subject once Facebook's circle is applied.

If your photo isn't square yet

Everything runs in your browser — your photo is never uploaded anywhere during cropping.
