UK Visa Photo Requirements
UK visa photos follow a similar biometric standard to the Schengen area, but with a few specifics of their own — here's what actually differs.
A UK visa photo needs to be 35×45mm (or 45×35mm equivalent in pixels for a digital upload — 600×750px at 300 DPI is the commonly cited digital spec), on a plain cream or light grey background, with a neutral expression and no shadows — and UK Visas and Immigration's own guidance is notably strict about the background color specifically not being pure white, which is a detail that trips people up coming from a US or Schengen photo where white or light backgrounds are standard.
The background color detail people miss
Unlike a US passport photo (pure white) or many Schengen photos (light background, more flexible), the UK's official guidance specifies a light grey or cream background — a photo taken against a plain white wall can technically fail the UK's own check even though it looks correct by other countries' standards. If you're photographing at home, a light grey or beige wall or a large sheet of light-colored card behind you is safer than pure white.
Getting the size right
The UK application typically wants the photo under roughly 6MB for the file itself but with specific pixel dimensions (at least 600×750px), so the practical issue isn't usually file size — it's making sure the crop and framing match the required proportions exactly:

Before you submit
- Glasses are generally discouraged now (photograph without them if you can see clearly without correction, or check current guidance if you need them)
- No head covering unless for religious reasons, and even then your full face from chin to forehead must be visible
