Zoom Profile Picture Size and Background Guide
Zoom shows your profile photo as a circle when your camera is off — here's the size that looks sharp, plus how to clean up a background instead of using Zoom's blur.
When your camera is off in a Zoom call, your profile picture is what everyone sees instead — front and center in a circle. A blurry or badly cropped photo stands out a lot more in that context than it would in a small app icon.
The right size
- Minimum: 96×96px (Zoom's stated minimum).
- Recommended: 512×512px square — Zoom displays it larger than most apps (full-screen during camera-off calls), so a low-res upload looks visibly soft.
- File size limit: 5MB, JPG/PNG/GIF/BMP.
- Shape: square upload, circular display — same rule as most video-call apps: center your face, since the corners get cropped.
Cropping it right
- Choose a well-lit, front-facing photo — Zoom's circular crop leaves little room for extreme angles.
- Use a square crop tool to frame your face centered in a 1:1 square.
- If the file is large (a photo straight from a phone can be 5-10MB), compress it before uploading — Zoom's uploader can time out on very large files on a slow connection.
What about the background?
Zoom's built-in blur works, but it can flicker or glitch on lower-end hardware and doesn't apply to your static profile photo at all — only your live video. If you want a clean, professional profile picture without redoing the whole photo, remove the background and swap in a solid color or a photo of your actual (tidy) workspace. That gives you one consistent, sharp image that works whether your camera is on or off.
